Shared summits.
Separate counties.

Understand the list before you start collecting the tops.

The short answer: 32 county entries, 27 named groupings.

Five pairs of counties share a named high-point entry: Carlow and Wexford (Mount Leinster), Cavan and Fermanagh (Cuilcagh), Derry and Tyrone (Sawel), Laois and Offaly (Arderin), and Limerick and Tipperary (Galtymore). That is why a 32 county challenge is often described using 27 high points. Grouping by name is convenient, but it does not mean every county’s precise highest ground is one identical spot.

Pay attention to boundary ground.

High Point Ireland distinguishes additional locations at Arderin and Galtymore because their summits are not perfectly shared across the county boundary. It also describes alternative candidate tops at Slieve Donard and Moylussa. Our county finder uses the named groupings for discovery. It is not a certification scheme: read the source details and use a detailed map when deciding the exact ground to visit.

The mountain summit can be the wrong county.

Sligo’s high point is Truskmore’s main summit, while Leitrim’s is the southeast slope. Roscommon’s high point is Seltannasaggart’s southeast slope, rather than the nearby main summit. Monaghan’s entry is Slieve Beagh East Top. These distinctions are the reason we keep separate county pages and avoid treating a mountain name as a precise navigation instruction.

How we handle heights and progress.

Displayed elevations consistently follow the High Point Ireland location pages, checked 15 October 2026. Official visitor pages sometimes round or report different heights; individual profiles explain material disagreements rather than silently mixing the figures. Your checklist has one tick per county. Visiting a shared mountain does not automatically tick another county: you decide which county high points you reached.
