County Derry at its highest

Sawel Mountain is the high point of County Derry, also commonly called County Londonderry, and shares the county-top role with Tyrone. It is the highest peak in the Sperrins, a broad upland region rather than an isolated roadside attraction. Tourism NI places the mountain in the Glenelly Valley walking landscape between Plumbridge and Draperstown. For your challenge, this is one mountain with two county records and a regional story worth exploring.

Before you go

Plan your visit

Start with an appropriate Sperrins map and decide how you will identify the shared summit and return to your starting point. Tourism NI's Glenelly Valley material gives regional context, not a complete Sawel navigation plan. Check the access position for your intended approach with local information before leaving. Keep the Derry and Tyrone checklist entries linked in your notes so a shared outing is recorded consistently without suggesting that two separate mountains were climbed.

Use a current detailed map, check weather and access, and choose a route within your experience. Plan a hill day →
