County Mayo at its highest
Mweelrea is the high point of County Mayo and the province of Connacht. It gives this part of the challenge a mountain destination within Mayo's western uplands, separate from the county's better-known pilgrimage objective at Croagh Patrick. High Point Ireland identifies it as the highest summit in the Mweelrea Mountains. Reaching a provincial top is a memorable milestone, but the practical task remains choosing and preparing for one specific mountain outing.
Before you go
Plan your visit
Research Mweelrea as its own objective rather than transferring a Croagh Patrick itinerary to it. High Point Ireland gives the summit as L790668 and recommends Discovery Sheet 37. Use a map covering the whole chosen approach and return, and seek current local mountain information before deciding on a route. The wider Mweelrea landscape is protected; check access and conservation advice, and do not assume that an online summit marker describes a maintained path.
