County Meath at its highest

Slieve na Calliagh is County Meath's high point in the Loughcrew hills near Oldcastle. Here the county challenge meets one of Ireland's important prehistoric landscapes: the wider Loughcrew cemetery contains Neolithic passage tombs spread over several hills. It is an outing where the archaeological setting deserves as much attention as the height. Identify the listed high point carefully and treat the monuments as protected heritage rather than summit furniture.

Before you go

Plan your visit

Read the current OPW Loughcrew visitor notice before travelling. When checked, the interior of Cairn T was closed for conservation work, while other monuments on the hill remained available to visit. OPW describes the climb as very steep and the approach road as very narrow. Check current arrangements, use suitable footwear and respect the no-climbing restrictions on the monuments. High Point Ireland recommends Discovery Sheet 42 for the county high-point location.

Use a current detailed map, check weather and access, and choose a route within your experience. Plan a hill day →
