County Monaghan at its highest
Monaghan's high point is Slieve Beagh East Top, a specific location within a much wider cross-border upland area. The distinction in the name is useful: a general trip to Slieve Beagh, or to a different top there, does not necessarily reach the Monaghan county objective. The area also contains protected bird habitat. Give both the boundary detail and the landscape's conservation purpose a place in your preparation and walking notes.
Before you go
Plan your visit
Match the East Top entry to a current detailed map before choosing an approach. High Point Ireland gives H532436 and recommends Discovery Sheet 28A or OSNI Discoverer Sheet 18. Check the county boundary rather than relying on a general Slieve Beagh map pin. Consult current access and conservation information for the route you intend to use, including the Slieve Beagh protected area, and avoid treating a regional waymarked walk as proof that it visits this particular top.
