County Wicklow at its highest
Lugnaquilla is the high point of County Wicklow and the province of Leinster. It is also the highest summit of the Wicklow Mountains, making it a substantial milestone in an all-island county project. The mountain's name appears with different spellings in sources, including High Point Ireland's Lugnaquillia. More important than spelling is the approach: some commonly researched outings involve the Glen of Imaal military area, where current access controls require particular attention.
Before you go
Plan your visit
Before using any Glen of Imaal approach, read the Defence Forces' live walking-route closure page and warning-system guidance. Military access is controlled, with only designated routes available when permitted; red flags, flashing lights and local notices must be obeyed. Never enter the impact area or touch suspected ordnance. Use an appropriate mountain map, such as Discovery Sheet 56 or dedicated Lugnaquilla mapping, and plan navigation and the return independently of this county-list description.
